DON’T LOOK Projects is pleased to introduce Chenhung Chen (b. 1961, Taiwan) to Chicago Expo. The presentation features a series of intricate sculptures and reliefs that weave together industrial refuse and organic metaphors to map the metaphysics of the contemporary moment.
At the heart of the concept is the transformation of technological detritus—specifically discarded electrical wires, conduits, and cables—into fluid, sprawling installations. Chen repurposes materials that are heavily charged with both utilitarian function and modern symbolism to interrogate the intersections of energy, connectivity, and cultural knowledge.
Key Elements of the Presentation:
-
Material Alchemy: Chen employs traditional crochet and weaving techniques passed down through generations, reimagining them through the lens of urban infrastructure and industrial waste.
-
The Concept of "Chi": By interlacing tangled wires, the works serve as a physical vocabulary for Chi—the Taoist vital force that flows through all living beings.
-
Dualities of the Digital Age: The booth highlights the tension between the fragile and the forceful. Electrical cables act as proxies for human neural networks and the invisible infrastructures that manage our era.
-
Process as Meditation: Featured works include the Listening series, where the act of crocheting manifests thought as form.
Rooted in her Taiwanese heritage, Chen’s work integrates the philosophies of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism to find a balance between chaos and order. DON’T LOOK Projects invites EXPO audiences to navigate a poetic, spatial topography that reconsiders the material and metaphysical structures defining our existence.
